Environmental Noise Monitoring not finished

Environmental noise monitoring involves measuring the level of noise produced by a site, operation, or activity that may affect surrounding areas - such as residential properties, commercial premises, schools, or public spaces.

We carry out environmental noise monitoring to help you understand the impact of your site’s noise on the surrounding environment. We’ll provide clear, accurate information on current noise levels, explain what those results mean and support you with any actions you may need to take.

What Is Environmental Noise Monitoring?

Environmental noise monitoring measures the noise produced by a site, operation, or activity and assesses how it affects surrounding areas, such as residential properties, commercial premises, schools, or public spaces.

It’s often required by planning permission, environmental permits, or local authority conditions. In other cases, it may be carried out because of noise complaints, or simply as good practice – especially if your site operates near noise-sensitive locations like homes, schools, or hospitals.

Why is Environmental Noise Monitoring Important?

Monitoring helps you understand whether your site’s noise is at an acceptable level or likely to cause disturbance, complaints, or enforcement action.

It provides clear evidence for demonstrating compliance with planning conditions and permits, and helps identify issues early so they can be managed before they escalate.

Environmental noise monitoring also shows that you’re managing your environmental impact responsibly, helping protect your reputation and maintain good relationships with the local community.

How is Environmental Noise Measured?

Environmental noise is measured using Class 1 sound level meters, calibrated to meet the requirements of BS 4142 and other relevant standards.

Monitoring can be:

  • Short-term - for quick checks or complaint investigations

  • Long-term or continuous - for ongoing compliance monitoring or where noise varies significantly over time

Measurements are taken at agreed locations, usually near the site boundary or at sensitive receptors such as nearby homes or schools. Results are compared with relevant limits, and the findings are interpreted to assess their potential impact.
