Legionella Risk Assessment

At Workplace Scientifics, we carry out Legionella risk assessments that are straightforward, thorough, and tailored to your building. If you're responsible for a property, workplace, or water system, we can help you get a clear understanding of your Legionella risks and what to do about them.

We’ll look at how your systems are actually used and provide advice that fits the way your site runs. You’ll receive a clear report, practical recommendations, and honest guidance if anything needs attention.

What Is a Legionella Risk Assessment?

A Legionella risk assessment looks at how your water systems are set up, how they’re used, and whether there’s a risk of harmful bacteria growing.

We’ll assess key areas such as your hot and cold water systems, storage tanks, pipework, and outlets like taps. The goal is to identify any conditions that could encourage Legionella to grow, such as stagnant water, warm temperatures, or poor maintenance.

Once the assessment is complete, you’ll receive a clear report that outlines any risks, the actions required, and how to manage those risks going forward.

Why Is A Legionella Risk Assessment Important?

Legionella bacteria can grow in water systems if conditions allow, and inhaling contaminated water droplets can cause serious illness, including Legionnaires’ disease. A Legionella risk assessment helps you identify and control these risks before they harm your staff, tenants, customers, or visitors.

If you’re responsible for a building or water system, you have a legal duty to protect people from exposure. A proper risk assessment shows that you’re managing your responsibilities under health and safety law, including ACoP L8 and COSHH.

More than that, it helps you stay in control of your systems. By spotting potential issues early - like stagnation, temperature risks, or poor maintenance - you can take simple steps to keep your water safe and avoid costly problems later on.

How Often Should Legionella Testing Be Done - and Is It a Legal Requirement?

Yes - carrying out a Legionella risk assessment is a legal requirement under the Health and Safety at Work Act, the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations, and HSE’s Approved Code of Practice L8 (ACoP L8). If you’re responsible for a building, system, or water supply that could pose a risk, you must assess and manage that risk.

There’s no fixed interval for how often the assessment must be repeated. HSE guidance is clear: you must review the risk assessment regularly and whenever there is reason to believe it may no longer be valid. This could include situations such as:

  • Changes to how the water system is used

  • Modifications or additions to the system itself

  • Changes in building use or occupancy

  • Evidence that control measures are no longer working

  • New guidance or risk information becomes available

We can help you determine when your assessment needs updating and make sure your control measures and documentation stay fully compliant.
